Individualized Skills Training
The program in organization and study strategies builds a toolbox of techniques for applied learning that improve the ability to be successful in school. The focus is on building skills that are generalizable to all academic areas. An individualized program is developed based on each child’s needs. Skills taught include:
- Getting the most out of listening and ways to be an active participant in class
- Focusing attention and setting goals for work
- Staying organized with notebooks, online resources, backpacks, and workspaces
- Calendaring, time blocking, breaking down long term assignments, and task prioritization
- Highlighting and note taking strategies
- Active reading strategies to help with reading efficiency and comprehension
- Critical thinking skills
- Self-monitoring and metacognitive skills
- Writing strategies to expand and organize the writing process
- Memory strategies for recall of information
- Test-taking tips to decrease test anxiety and improve test-taking accuracy
